  • Knabe’s history goes back over 200 years to 1803, when Wilhelm (William) Knabe was born in Germany. He learned piano and cabinet making through apprenticeships and hard work. After moving to Baltimore, Maryland, he worked with piano maker Henry Hartge before starting his own piano repair business in 1835.

Soon after, Knabe partnered with Henry Gaehle to form Knabe & Gaehle, making high-quality grand, upright, and square pianos. In 1838, Francis Scott Key, writer of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” ordered a custom Knabe piano, which still exists today at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis.

After William Knabe’s death in 1864, his sons took over the business. Despite challenges like the Civil War, the company grew and gained national respect. In 1891, Knabe sponsored composer Tchaikovsky’s appearance at the grand opening of Carnegie Hall, where one of its pianos was played.

In 1926, Knabe became the official piano of the New York Metropolitan Opera, used by stars like soprano Rosa Ponselle. The brand later became part of several companies and is now owned by Samick Music Corporation, one of the world’s largest instrument makers.

Today, Knabe pianos are handmade in limited numbers, keeping the tradition of fine craftsmanship alive. Known for their beautiful sound and unique character, modern Knabe pianos use many original designs from the 19th century, making each one a work of art with a voice like no other.
