String Instrument Sizing Guide
Updated: 4 days ago
A common occurrence that happens at our store is that the well intentioned family member wants to purchase a violin or some instrument for there family member. And while we would love for you to have the experience of taking a violin that you own home-- we will ask you to wait a minute! Because we have to see the person. The simple fact of the matter is that there are different sizes for different heights!

Of course, there's usually some back an forth, like "they are 10 and ye tall. What size should I get?"-- and we have to reiterate that age is irrelevant in the equation, because age does not tell us their height, arm length, hand size, or if they'll even be comfortable with the instrument. Hence why we always recommend giving us a visit! But we understand that this is not always possible so we made this guide to be used as a starting point to get the right instrument size especially if you are planning a to rent-to-own from us at the comfort of your own home!
Using the sizing guides
Keep in mind, these sizing charts are generalities. Ultimately, the right choice is the one where the instrument is most comfortable to the player and allows them to have proper technique, is the right choice for them.
For growing players or anyone who is still exploring which instrument is the best fit, Melody Mart’s flexible rent-to-own program can make sizing easier. When a student outgrows their current instrument, sizing up is included as part of the rental process.
Measure the player's arm length and use the charts below to give you an idea of what size instrument would work best for them. It is better to physically try the instruments because a good fit generally allows the player to play with proper technique.

Still Not Sure What Size You Need?
That’s okay! We still stand by coming to our shop and letting us help you or your loved one! Every musician is built a little differently, and again the right size is the instrument that feels comfortable and allows you to play with good technique.
Schedule a rental appointment with us and we can help you find the right fit in person. You’ll be able to hold the instrument, compare sizes, and make sure you’re starting with something that actually feels comfortable.
Plus, if you're shopping for a younger musician who isn't done growing yet, renting can take some of the pressure out of choosing a size. Melody Mart’s rent-to-own program allows students to size up as they grow, so you don't have to worry about purchasing an instrument they'll outgrow.
