What to Expect at Your First Session at MM

At this point, you’ve probably had your ear talked off about our program (Or you've explored the website extensively... right?). But you are finally here! It can be exciting, nerve-wracking, and sometimes a little overwhelming. Rest assured, our goal is to make this as warm and welcoming as possible regardless of what your musical background is. So here is somethings to expect at your very first lesson:

Before the First Session
After you’ve talked to our lovely scheduling coordinator, you should get an email detailing all information regarding instruction and your (new) educator should reach out at some point before the start of your first lesson. Remember, right now is not the time to panic! Don’t worry about materials, even if you don’t have an instrument– remember, we got you. Just patiently (and excitedly) wait for your first session.
The Day of Your First Session
Just a little bit more paper work
We always ask you to arrive about 15 minutes before the start of your lesson, just to get all the paperwork out of the way.
A Warm Welcome
When you arrive, our front desk team will check you in and guide you to your lesson space. We know those first few minutes can feel nerve-wracking, so our staff and instructors make it a priority to greet you with warmth and ease.
What about an instrument???
A few things, if you have an instrument, bring it! Well… except if it’s a piano or a drumset. But if you don’t have one, we will work with you every step of the way to make sure we help you feel comfortable and confident in making the right financial decisions when it comes to music making. We will address it all when you arrive. We’ll talk to you about our Rent-to-Own Program or purchasing an instrument. Again, we got you and we will sort it out together before the lesson.
Introducing your new teacher!
Either the educator will make an appearance at the front desk or we will walk you to their studio. And from there, your educator will take it away! During the first few minutes, the educator may start by learning about you by asking about your interests, experience, and goals and maybe they’ll share a bit about their background. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before; sharing what excites you about music helps your educator build the lessons to fit your lifestyle and make sure you reach your goals.
During Instruction
Depending on your experience will determine the next steps. Plus, private instruction is so individualized that lessons look a little different for everyone. Beyond getting to know you, the educator will walk you through some basics like what practice looks like, how to set realistic goals, or what you’ll need to succeed outside of class. If you have some experience, they may ask you to play something just so they get an idea of where to start. Or they may walk you through one of your first exercises or concepts. It all depends on the student and teacher!
After Your First Session
And Now You are Done! Next Steps
Each session is unique to the individual, but in general, your teacher will give you a chance to ask questions and talk through what comes next in the upcoming week. You’ll leave your first lesson with a plan, a little bit of music to try at home, and hopefully with lots of excitement!
